Save Your Waistline

By | Nutrition, Weight Loss | No Comments

save

We are only one week into December and I have already eaten way too much. We have been invited to so many wonderful parties and open houses and practicing self-control is hard. I know most people have this struggle every year. Did you know the average American gains between 7 and 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Crazy right? My Dad, who barely gained an ounce, ever, would drink eggnog every night from Thanksgiving to Christmas. He would gain 10 pounds. December 26th he stopped and within a week he lost his 10 pounds. This really ticked off the girls in the house. It was just not fair.

My guess it that most people are not like my Dad and do not lose their holiday weight that fast. Here are a few tips to help you stay in control at all of your Christmas gatherings.

Save Your waist-2

  • Do not go hungry. I will have a bowl of miso soup before I go. It helps take away hunger but does not fill me up so much that I can’t have a few treats. This is the miso that I love Miso-Cup Japanese Restaurant Style, 2.9-Ounce Pouch(Pack of 6) It is one of the few that I can find that is both gluten-free and vegan.
  • Drink Water. Before you drink a high calorie beverage drink a glass of water. Then between each drink have another glass of water. You can save so many calories by not having as many alcoholic or high sugar beverages. You can also opt for coffee. It gives you something to hold and it can take longer to drink.
  • Stay away from the food table. So often the conversations linger around the food table. While having conversation you can pick up hundreds of calories while not even realizing it. Get what you want and then walk into another room and have your conversations there.
  • Fruit First. Before you have yourself a cookie, cheese or other treat, fill your plate with fruits and veggies. Watch out for high calorie dips. Eat those and then if you are truly hungry go back for that special treat.
  • Don’t deny yourself. I find that when I do not allow myself to have anything I end up eating more and feeling awful later. I feel much better when I know I stayed in control and still had a good time.

I hope you find these tips helpful. If you have any other suggestions I would love to hear them. Post them in the comment section below.

If you are interested January 4th I will be starting a new accountability to group to start out the new year out right. I will have more details coming soon. If you want to see more on my accountability groups click here. If you think you are interested in joining post in the comments below.

A Runner’s Christmas Gift Wish List

By | Uncategorized | 6 Comments

Never know what to get the runner on your list?

Let me help you out. I have been running for many years and have trained well over 300 people to run/walk marathons and half marathons, so I have seen a lot of running gear. Some I love and others not so much.

This is my 3rd year to make this list. I think it is my favorite post of the year. I have combined the gift ideas from the last two years plus added new to make this list even better. Feel free to ask any questions about any of the products.

  1. Safety First

I am a safety first kind of girl so this is one of my favorite suggestions. This is a tag you get made with your info so that if something were to happen while out running, or participating in any activity, your emergency information is easily found.

Shoe ID Tags – Important Identification for Runners, Cyclists, Athletes, Travelers, and Children

2. Hydration Belts

Personally I have always used the brand, Fuel Belt, but I have never heard complaints on any brand. Depending on the distance your runner runs would be how many ounces you would want to make sure the belt holds. The types of hydration belts come in lots of varieties, some you wear and some you hold. My favorite is the one shown below.

Fuelbelt Revenge 4 Bottle Belt (Royal/White, Medium)

3. Spi Belts

I LOVE my Spi Belt. It holds so much. Yes it even holds an iPhone 6 and keys.

SPIbelt Sports / Running Belt – The Original No Bounce Belt – Large Pocket Fits New iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy – Black with HotPink Zipper

4. Compression Pants

These are gold for runners. They help prevent injuries, help circulation and provide stability. It took me a while before I would splurge on them, but it is all I wear on my long runs. They come in various brands, colors and lengths. The ones shown below are my favorites.

CW-X Women’s 3/4 Length Stabilyx Tights (Black, Medium)

5. Compression Socks

These are fantastic for recovery. They are mostly worn during recovery, but at times I will wear them while I run. These are getting very popular and come in a variety of colors and designs. Again, my favorite brand is the one shown below. You can get them in all heights or even footless. If your runner struggles with shin splints I would recommend the tall or footless ones.

PRO Compression: Marathon Compression Socks, Purple, Small/Medium

6. PiYo

This is a fantastic workout program to compliment marathon training. It is fantastic for stretching and strengthening the core.

7Hydration Backpacks

For those of you that know long distance runners, ultra runners, hikers or other similar sports this is a great product.  I love this pack because it can carry up to 100 oz. of water depending on which size you purchase. This is very helpful on hot summer days to not have to stop and refill, or when you are in a place you cannot refill. It also help to keep the water cool. Think small and light because it does have to be worn while running and you don’t want it to move around. One thing I wish mine had was a pocket in the front on the shoulder strap. Look around there are many brands, styles and features.

Camelbak Products Men’s Classic Hydration Pack, Pure Blue, 70-Ounce

8. Socks

Socks make great stocking stuffers. Many runners are very specific as to which sock they like so you may want to find out before buying. If you know someone that is new to running trying different brands is a great way to see what works. Plus I have learned you can never have too many pairs. Do Not go out and get regular socks made of cotton. I have also never found a generic store brand that works better. They tend to stretch out quickly, and there is nothing worse than a sock that falls down. My favorite brand is feetures.

Feetures Unisex Elite Ultra Light No Show Tab – Deep Purple/Periwinkle Socks MD (Men’s Shoe 5-8.5, Women’s Shoe 6.5-9.5)

9. Shakeology

This is such a great product for everyday health. Shakeology contains over 70 superfood ingredients to help your body recover everyday. The link below is to a sampler pack so each flavor can be tried before purchasing a month supply.

10. Foam Roller

This is a injury preventer and life saver. Many runners, especially woman, have experienced pain in the IT band.  This roller helps to work out that pain as well as help other areas. You basically use your body weight and roll over the roller to help break up the lactic acid that builds up. Exercises usually come with the roller plus you can find them demonstrated online. There are two types, one is smooth and others have bumps as shown below. I prefer the smooth because it hurts less, but the bumpy one can get deeper into the muscle.

11. YANKZ

Another great stocking stuffer and inexpensive. This is a type of shoelace that is great for those of us who just want to slip our shoes on and go. I used these when I did a triathlon and needed to be able to get my shoes on quickly and not worry about getting them tied right.

Yankz Sure Lace System – Black Laces with Black Casings

12. Garmin or other GPS Watch

I use to own a garmin and I would still highly recommend the garmin brand. This is a watch designed for runners, walkers and cyclist that measures your distance, speed, calories, maps your run and many more things you can imagine. I am really hoping this is what I find under my Christmas tree this year. I am still in debate over a new garmin or an apple watch. I am currently using my phone with multiple apps to do some of what the garmin did and if I could see all of that on the apple watch I would be in Heaven. Also, to be able to change the music on the watch and not have to dig my phone out would be fantastic.

One of my friends has this Garmin and loves it.

Garmin Forerunner 15 Small, Teal/White

Apple Watch 38mm Silver Aluminum Case Blue Sport Band

13. Running Jacket

When purchasing a jacket you want to find one that is light weight and can fold up easily if you need to take it off during the run. I personally like to make sure it has a hood.

Sugoi Men’s Hydrolite Jacket, White/Black, Small

14. Gloves

In the south I did not need these often, but when I did need them I was so glad to have them. Now they are a must.  Mine are Brooks running gloves, but the ones shown below look exactly the same. They have the yellow “wind breaker” cover that pulls over.

Pearl Izumi Shine Wind Mitt,Black,Medium

15. Fleece Lined Running Pants

This is a new one for me. Never in my life would I think this is something I would need. We just moved from Houston, Tx. to Montana and my entire running wardrobe is needing a change. I thought the fleece lining would feel awful but it was not. Loved them.

Sugoi Women’s MidZero Tight (Black, X-Small)

16. Marathon Woman: Running the Race to Revolutionize Women’s Sports

This is such a great book. Katherine was the first woman to run in the Boston Marathon. H

Last but certainly not least…

17. The New Performance Line

This is my all time favorite product for this year. This is the new performance line released this summer. I was able to try it out while training for a half marathon this fall. I had much less soreness and it all tasted really good. You can purchase each item individually or all together in a stack as you will find in the link below.

Failure Is Not An Option

By | Encouragement, Weight Loss | 13 Comments

This is a post I truly feel I need to write but I do not want to in the least. To write this it means I have to admit I failed. It has been on my heart to write this because I know I am not the only one who struggles with this and hopefully my struggle will help you with yours. I often find blogging fun, but there are times when I feel I am supposed to write something and it means being vulnerable it gets awfully scary. So here we go.

I joined BeachBody in the spring of 2012. I was very excited about the opportunity to help not only myself but others. I thrive on encouraging others and seeing them reach their goals. In beginning this journey I joined up with friends and we did P90X and we did great. I lost 20 pounds and felt amazing. Watch this…

So the easiest way for me to to describe the past year was that it sucked. There was death, diagnoses, loss, rejection and more that I never want to experience again. Unfortunately in that I began to struggle with depression again. In this time I discovered a lot about myself and one that I was an emotional eater. I was silly to not think of that before but it hit me like a ton of bricks. I had worked so hard to lose weight and I was 3 pounds from my goal. When the first blow came my first thought went to food and I remember thinking how strange that was but in some crazy way it brought comfort.

So now I am admitting I have gained all of those 20 pounds back. I have really struggled because I am trying to help others and in so failing to help myself. I have come to the fork in the road. I can continue on the route that I do not like or I can take the harder route and do what I did before and overcome this once and for all.

I am pretty sure I am not alone in this so I want to start a group that really focuses on emotional eating and trying to figure out what are those triggers that make us want to eat so we can break them. I know I cannot do this alone. I need you and the strength of my Lord and Savior. So there will also be a faith aspect to this where we truly can break the chains of bondage.

If you want to join me on this journey I would absolutely love it. Just email me and we can begin this journey. Our group will begin September 1. The group is private and you will be there with others that have the same struggles. The kids will be back in school. It will be a time of no more excuses.

Are you in?

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

I have now been drinking Shakeology for more than three years. I cannot say enough about how much I love this stuff. My afternoon snack attack is gone and I very rarely have any cravings.

As a vegan I love having it because is has ample amounts of vitamin D and B12.

I now have my husband and son drinking it. Without changing any other aspect of his diet or daily routine, my husband dropped 10 pounds in the first three weeks of replacing breakfast with Shakeology.  For my son, I love knowing that at breakfast he is getting everything he needs for the day.

Did you know that Shakeology has now been clinically proven?

Here are some videos to give you a little more info.

You can go to my shakeology website to read all you would ever want to know about these fabulous flavors, Chocolate, Greenberry, Vanilla, Strawberry, Vegan Chocolate and Vegan Tropical Strawberry.

Want to try each of the different flavors? Get your trial pack here.

If you have already decided you want to make Shakeology a part of your day you can pick your flavor and order here. If you order with the HD behind the flavor this is home direct where they will send you Shakeology once a month. The bonus is you save lots on shipping and you don’t have to think about reordering.

Pontypoole Challenge Day 1

By | Marathons and other Road Races | No Comments

As you read in the previous post the Pembroke Coastal Challenge did not go as planned (cliffs, 45 mph wind gusts, hail and mud).  So Tina and I chose to make out own challenge.  We called this the Pontypoole Challenge.  I do have to say it was a lot more fun.

Sam, my husband, dropped us off at the canal close to where we were staying.  We knew the canal was roughly 45 miles long so he just said for us to call when we were done.  Here are just a few pictures of what we saw along the canal.

Sunrise over the canal.

The beautiful fall leaves.

Tina on one of our detours from the trail to see the little water falls.

Sheep, Sheep and more Sheep.

The canal boats.

Next time I am there I want to take a ride in one of these.  However, this time we got to assist in a dog rescue using the boats.

Our Finish

One of the best parts about the UK is that everything ends in the pub.

It made for a great after run meal.

Pembroke Coastal Challenge 2012

By | Marathons and other Road Races | 3 Comments

The Pembroke Coastal Challenge consists of three marathons in three days where you run along the Pembroke Coastal Trail. This is an absolutely beutiful area of the world and definitely a place worth putting on your bucket list. However, training in Houston, Texas could not prepare me for what was required. I looked up YouTube videos of the race to see the different terrains. I saw gravel so I ran many miles on gravel. I also saw lots of dirt trails, so I trained on dirt trails. But what we came across was mud! Not just regular mud but ankle deep mud. Those in the challenge that live in the Pembroke area were flying across the stuff. As for Tina and I, it slowed us down considerably. While trudging through the mud I fell not once but three times. The first time I just got agitated, the second time I twisted my ankle and fell face first in the most awesome grass ever. I just laid there for a while having an emotional moment, but felt I better get up before Tina found me laying there and panicked. The third time however, after I fell I heard some stomping and looked up to find five cows staring down at me. One warning given to us before the challenge began was the cliffs.  It was mentioned that 5 people had died by slipping off the cliffs from 1981 – 1996.  I did not want to be the next statistic.  My concern was not the closeness to the cliff as it was the closeness combined with the slippery mud. I completed 20 miles and had to make the decision that I should not continue the challenge.  It is the first time I have not completed a race I have started, but with conditions I was just not prepared for I had to listen to that gut feeling that says to stop.  So I did.  I am very disapointed but I know I did what was best for me.  Below are some more pictures of this fabulous coast.

Even though I did not finish it was an experience I will never forget.  I have never run through cow pastures, flocks of sheep or among horses.  If you are someone considering this race and you are from a flatland area I would suggest you really think about how you can train for such an event.  If you are already one of these crazy mountain runners then this would be an amazing race for you.  The staff were wonderful and very concerned for the welfare of each participant.
